Expecting Some Tight Competition for its 88th Edition

 The CYC Around the Island Race is shaping up to have some very tight competition for its 88th edition this year (Sept. 6). Over this past weekend, five of the 25 teams signed up (to-date) took on the Ida Lewis Distance Race, and all finished with strong results. See highlighted competitors in the following photo story:

This past Saturday at 5:50 a.m., Brian Cunha’s Ker 55 Irie 2 crossed the finish line for the 2015 Ida Lewis Distance Race, claiming line honors and taking the overall win in PHRF division! Brook Mastrorio was the only female skipper in the Ida Lewis Distance Race and looks to be the only female skipper signed up to race in the Around the Island Race to-date. This weekend, she took third-place in PHRF A with her J/109 URSA. (Photo Credit: Meghan Sepe)  
Alfred Van Liew and David Brodsky’s J/111 Odyssey won the overnighter’s separately-scored Youth Challenge, accompanied by seven junior sailors. Odyssey will also be on the start line for the Around the Island Race, maybe with a few youth sailors joining them again. (Photo Credit: Meghan Sepe)

Also, Bill Kneller’s J/109 Vento Solare and John Gowell’s Taylor 41 Temptress both took fourth-place finishes in PHRF A and B, respectively.

An 18-Mile Sprint Around Conanicut Island For the 89 th Annual CYC Around the Island Race yesterday, it was a sprint around Conanicut Island, with competitors experiencing strong chop and breeze between 20 and 25 knots throughout the day. Race Veteran Brooke Mastrorio Takes to the Water Again this Sunday!

Brooke Mastrorio is one of only two women skippers signed up (to-date) for the 88th edition of the CYC Around the Island Race, taking place this Sunday, September 6 in Narragansett Bay. This year will mark her fifth time racing in the annual event. URSA at the 2014 event (Photo Credit Hillary Dutton) “This island (Conanicut) is so beautiful to sail around,” said Mastrorio who will be racing with her team on the J/109 URSA. “When you round Beavertail and pop the kite, the view of 70+ boats with their spinnakers flying is so impressive.” When asked if she hopes to empower more women to take the helm, Mastrorio said “Yes! The helm is a crew position that requires more mental skills than physical. Focus is the key element. I have met plenty of women that can do this! Return Competitor: Jan Petr Trousilek, Mad Czech

Mad Czech the 2013 CYC Around the Island Race where it won Division A (Photo Credit: Hillary Dutton) Jan Petr Trousilek has raced in the CYC Around the Island Race eight times on three different boats and will compete again this year with his Chaser 33 Mad Czech. Jan and his family summer in Jamestown, but spend the rest of the year in Prague. The Mad Czech team races under burgees for the Czech Yacht Club (Prague) and the Newport Yacht Club. “We leave for Europe right after the Around the Island Race, so it is always a great end to our racing season. We like this race and have many friends racing in our class so it is always great fun, and our island is so beautiful and we see great weather most of the time,” said Jan whose crew consists of his son Jan P Trousilek VI as well as Rhode Island sailors Diane Ericson, Vera Gierke, Ryan Stankowitz.
