Local sailors fare well

JAMESTOWN — The 88th Around the Island Race, hosted by Conanicut Yacht Club, featured 96 boats in 11 divisions on Sunday, with several Newport County sailors placing in the top three of their respective divisions.

Dennis Nixon of Jamestown and Lynx finished second in Class A, Four Suns and captain Charles Beal, also of Jamestown, took third in Class B and Corey Sertl of Jamestown captained Lucy to a third-place finish in Class C. Lucy also took the Robert A. MacLeod Rear Commodore Trophy for the day-sailer with the fastest corrected time. Locals swept the top spots in Class D, with John Mollicone (Pipe Dream) and Jeffrey Adam (Sugar Magnolia), both of Newport, taking first and second, respectively. Henry Lane of Jamestown and FastLane took third. Ed Adams of Newport, captain of Comet, won Class E, while Jamestown’s Chris Brown and Luna finished third.

In Class F, Andrew Kallfelz of Jamestown and Aurora finished second and Temptress with captain John Gowell of Jamestown won Class G. Kallfelz also claimed the Eads Johnson Trophy for the large boat with the fastest corrected time.

Clay Deutsch of Newport, aboard Just A Friend, won Class H while Ben Jacobsen of Jamestown led Avalance to a second-place finish. Lincoln Mossop of Jamestown skippered The Cat Came Back to a victory in Class J, Alfred Van Liew of Middletown finished second with Odyssey and Paul Hamilton of Jamestown and Entropy took third.
Glen Walters of Newport with HH42 won Class K, Reef Points with captain Gurdon Wattles of Little Compton took second and Newport’s Todd Stuart led White Rhino to a thirdplace finish.

Mad Czech the 2013 CYC Around the Island Race where it won Division A (Photo Credit: Hillary Dutton) Jan Petr Trousilek has raced in the CYC Around the Island Race eight times on three different boats and will compete again this year with his Chaser 33 Mad Czech. Jan and his family summer in Jamestown, but spend the rest of the year in Prague. The Mad Czech team races under burgees for the Czech Yacht Club (Prague) and the Newport Yacht Club. “We leave for Europe right after the Around the Island Race, so it is always a great end to our racing season. We like this race and have many friends racing in our class so it is always great fun, and our island is so beautiful and we see great weather most of the time,” said Jan whose crew consists of his son Jan P Trousilek VI as well as Rhode Island sailors Diane Ericson, Vera Gierke, Ryan Stankowitz.

Race Veteran Brooke Mastrorio Takes to the Water Again this Sunday!

Brooke Mastrorio is one of only two women skippers signed up (to-date) for the 88th edition of the CYC Around the Island Race, taking place this Sunday, September 6 in Narragansett Bay. This year will mark her fifth time racing in the annual event. URSA at the 2014 event (Photo Credit Hillary Dutton) “This island (Conanicut) is so beautiful to sail around,” said Mastrorio who will be racing with her team on the J/109 URSA. “When you round Beavertail and pop the kite, the view of 70+ boats with their spinnakers flying is so impressive.” When asked if she hopes to empower more women to take the helm, Mastrorio said “Yes! The helm is a crew position that requires more mental skills than physical. Focus is the key element. I have met plenty of women that can do this! It just takes time and a supportive crew to get there. Building your confidence level to be on the starting line with 20 other boats is one of my biggest challenges. An 18-Mile Sprint Around Conanicut Island For the 89 th Annual CYC Around the Island Race yesterday, it was a sprint around Conanicut Island, with competitors experiencing strong chop and breeze between 20 and 25 knots throughout the day. The 68-boat fleet started on time, with a majority of the boats finishing the race before 3pm. “I’ve wondered all week if we would actually be able to do a race on Sunday,” said Race Chairman Alan Baines adding that the impending threat of Tropical Storm Hermine had many people worried that the conditions would be too rough.  “However, everything turned out all right and the fleet started in a breezy northeasterly wind, heading up East Passage, and around the top of the island before flying downwind down the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. Rounding Beavertail Point, competitors experienced a bit of a swell, courtesy of Hermine, before beating back up the Bay to the finish off Conanicut Yacht
