The 89th Conanicut Yacht Club Around the Island Race kicks off tomorrow with a fleet of 95 boats expected on the starting line in Narragansett Bay. The annual event features a complete circumnavigation of Conanicut (Jamestown) Island. With a tropical storm making its way up the coast, conditions are looking to be on the windier side, with a northeast breeze forecasted between 20 and 26 knots.

"The Race Committee is watching the weather with a wary eye, and what impact that may give us for Sunday's race, in terms of wind, waves and rain,” said Race Chairman Alan Baines. “While it is the individual captain’s decision as to whether to race or not, we naturally want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable race. The Race Committee has the option of doing a course within The Bay, if needed, which is a decision to be made closer to the start of racing.”

The first class is expected to start racing tomorrow at 11 a.m., and the start and finish line will be east of the Conanicut Yacht Club.
